It is "astonishing" how well children can use smartphones, an expert believes.
TV technology expert Ella Williamson said a three-year-old would be able to play games on a handset and navigate its various functions.
This could stem from the fact they are being introduced to computers at an increasingly young age at school, she suggested.
However, instead of this being a bad thing it could actually be a way of teaching youngsters and present a new method of delivering information.
"Entertaining and educating children on the go is something that technology is really forward-moving for," Ms Williamson continued.
She added parents can also get apps that allow them to download books on to their phone or tablet, which can be interactive and a "fantastic visual experience" for children.
This comes after a study by digital marketing agency Click Consult found browsing social networking sites and talking to friends online is now a more popular pastime among young people than watching TV.
