Collaborative mobile payments initiative 'behind schedule'

A new mobile payments scheme from Vodafone, Telefonica and Everything Everywhere is unlikely to be ready in time for the London Olympics.

Last June, the three enterprises unveiled Project Oscar - an initiative that would see them launch a new company to develop a set of technical standards for mobile payments and advertising on all networks and devices.

However, sources told the Daily Telegraph they have still not submitted their papers for approval to the European Commission, which means the launch of the scheme could be delayed.

Originally, the companies had wanted it to be up and running in time for the Olympics to take advantage of the expected increased in smartphone use.

Three - the other major mobile phone network provider in the UK - is against the plans and its regulatory director Stephen Lerner said they are "akin to a joint-selling arrangement".

The Olympics will kick off on July 27th and run until August 12th.
