New research has revealed 50.3 per cent of Brits own a smartphone.
According to research by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, Android is still the market leader, but Apple is making gains.
While phones running on Google's operating system accounted for the majority of sales, Apple's share increased from 21.7 per cent a year ago to 29.1 per cent.
Windows Phone 7 has also made gains, with sales of the Nokia Lumia 800 boosting the brand to take two per cent of the market.
Global consumer insight director at Kantar Dominic Sunnebo said more consumers are "jumping on the bandwagon".
"For the first time ever, you are now in the minority if you don't own a smartphone," he added.
In the 12 weeks ending January 22nd 2012, smartphones made up 71.4 per cent of all mobile phone sales in the UK.
These findings support those of Gartner, which recently revealed 472 million smartphones were sold worldwide in 2011.
