Clipper® BayPass Pilot Program Overview
The Clipper BayPass pilot program offers select participants free, unlimited access to all bus, rail, and ferry services across the nine-county Bay Area. Designed in two phases, the pilot evaluates how a universal transit pass could influence travel behavior and regional mobility.
San José State University (»Ê¹ÚÌåÓý²©²Ê) is currently participating in Phase One of the program, which is provided at no cost to 7,000 randomly selected students. BayPass grants unlimited access to more than 23 Bay Area transit agencies that accept Clipper.
Phase One is scheduled to conclude on June 30, 2025.
BayPass Pilot Phase One Conclusion FAQS:
1. Why is our participation in the pilot concluding?
Students were invited to participate in the pilot through June 30, 2025. All institutions participating are invited to purchase the BayPass as part of the next phase of the pilot. San José State University is in ongoing conversations about purchasing the BayPass in the future.
2. Can I keep my Clipper Card?
Yes, you may continue to use your Clipper Card on all Bay Area transit where Clipper is accepted.
3. Will I lose access to the VTA SmartPass?
No, you’ll still have the VTA SmartPass. Your student transit benefit reverts to what was previously available to you before joining the BayPass pilot. To learn more about your SmartPass, visit www.sjsu.edu/as/departments/transportation-solutions/smartpass-overview/index.php
4. What happens to my BayPass on June 30, 2025?
The last day you may use your BayPass is June 30, 2025. Your BayPass will be inactive as of July 1, 2025.
